When I was a kid we always got a big Christmas tree and it sat in the corner of our big living room and everyone was happy. Our house was not enormous by any means, but perhaps it simply had less stuff it in than today’s modern dwellings. Certainly almost no one lived in a small apartment when I was young although that is far more common these days. It seems that in general, big Christmas trees are becoming less common, except perhaps ones in commercial establishments and public places like town squares. Not to worry as there are trees that will fit almost anywhere. With so many types and styles of trees, you are almost guaranteed to find one you love that fits into your space, whether a cramped New York City Apartment or a more spacious area. Here are 5 types of small Christmas trees to consider.

The first is simply a smaller version of a natural tree. Although we usually get a 5 to 7 foot tree, I have noticed tree sellers stocking many shorter and narrower trees. For example last season I saw plenty of trees, if you shopped early, that ranged from 3 feet tall and higher. I know that in previous years I saw few if any trees of that height. Unfortunately the short ones can cost as much as the larger ones at some places! You also may need to shop around until you find a smaller tree.

Another option, one I absolutely love, is using a potted plant, decorated appropriately. I’ve seen pines of various types including Norfolk Pines, Ficus trees, large jade plants, and many more. It’s nice having a live tree or other plant, although you may need to be careful decorating to not overload or otherwise harm it. You may already have a potted plant that is perfect.

Artificial trees are becoming more common as they are much more realistic than say a decade or two ago. A great artificial will look extremely realistic, last for decades if cared for, doesn’t need water, doesn’t drop leaves, and has a small carbon footprint as you recycle as in reuse them year after year. And no one will know it is a fake tree unless you tell them or they look at it in enormous detail. You will find plenty of 4 foot, 3 foot and smaller trees to consider.

Option four is an artificial tree that doesn’t even attempt to look natural. Many look perfect except for the color. In nature I know of no pink, purple, red, champagne, black, or rainbow colored trees! These are lots of fun and usually need little or no decorations to look awesome! Children seem absolutely fascinated by these as well. My friend JJ has a 3 foot pink tree for example that is just great and fits in his minuscule apartment quite well.

The last option I’ll mention is a small vintage aluminum tree from the 1960s with a color wheel. These were extremely popular 50 years ago and are making a comeback. You can purchase a replica “retro” style or get a true antique, for example on eBay.

There are plenty of options in small to very small Christmas trees. I even have one on my desk in my office!
