In order to get the most prints out of a printer's ink cartridge, it's important to choose one that supplies enough ink without compromising quality in the prints. The HP 60XL fits almost all HP printers, from the HP Deskjet 1600 Series to the HP Photosmart e-All-in-One Series. Like most HP ink cartridges, the 60XL is sold in both color and black.

Regardless if it is a black cartridge or the 60XL Tricolor Ink, they provide two times more prints than original HP cartridges; in fact, a 2007 QualityLogic survey showed that the 60XL produced over 50% more prints than traditional store brands. Not only does the 60XL produce more prints, but it also dries quickly, which means that prints can be handled much sooner without the risk of smudging the paper -- this is also true of photos using Tricolor ink. The quality of HP ink also creates more true-to-life color because both the Tricolor and black cartridges use Vivera ink technology, which is Hewlett Packard's proprietary ink. This type of ink is pure, which reduces the amount of head-clogging that can happen in the printer. The 60XL ink is also created with HP-exclusive properties that guard against airborne pollutants; with that, photos will be protected from fading for generation after generation. Although the 60XL ink works best with HP Photo Paper, it can also produce similar results on standard paper. The Vivera ink technology creates some of the most vivid colors and clearest black text available in an ink cartridge. To give an estimate on the amount of pages each black 60XL ink cartridge can print, approximately 600 pages are possible depending on the printer and its specific use; with the Tricolor ink, 440 pages are likely. This also depends on the type of cartridge being used; a standard cartridge should be used for occasional printing, while the value cartridge should be used for high-volume printing. Even though HP 60 ink cartridges use the same Vivera technology as other HP ink products, the HP 60XL ink cartridges provide more pages per use, which means less money spent on refills.
